Recovery from an eating disorder can be challenging. For many people, managing psychological symptoms is a long-term endeavor. With treatment, however, a child or adolescent can return to healthier eating habits and reverse many of the serious complications that result from eating disorders.

Specialists at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at ÃÙȦ×ÊÔ´Õ¾ Langone offer support services for children and teens recovering from eating disorders. Our child and family support services and resilience programs are provided by Sala Institute for Child and Family Centered Care.

Medical Management

Specialists at the Child Study Center, part of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital, make it a priority to keep your child’s primary care physician informed about his or her progress toward recovery from an eating disorder. They also monitor your child’s nutrition and weight to ensure that his or her dietary needs are being met.

Medication is often a part of treatment for eating disorders when a child has additional conditions, such as anxiety or mood disorders. If medication is part of your child’s treatment plan, our doctors provide ongoing monitoring and medication management to ensure that symptoms are improving with minimal side effects.

Ongoing Psychological Care

Our experts offer ongoing care for children and teens with eating disorders, including psychotherapy and behavior therapy, to prevent a relapse. Our psychologists and psychiatrists can also connect you and your child with community resources, such as support groups.

The Body Project

The Body Project is an evidence-based program to help adolescent girls feel better about their bodies. Designed for girls ages 14 to 18, the program consists of four weekly one-hour sessions led by a clinical expert at the Child Study Center. Through discussions and team activities, group members develop resilience, challenge social messages glorifying thinness, and improve self-esteem.
